Имя Майкла Кенны сегодня, как и последние три десятка лет, неизменно ассоциируется с пейзажной фотографией. Он гуру пейзажа. Работы Майкла Кенны представлены в семидесяти музейных собраниях, его творчеству посвящено более тридцати книг. Кенна снимает французские провинции и японские сады, американские атомные станции и петербургскую скульптуру. Один из главных принципов Кенны — находить с миром общий язык. Нельзя смутить, потревожить или разозлить мир. Свое творчество он называет фотоанализом.
Сын английского рабочего, не имея больших перспектив в будущем, Майкл Кенна хотел посвятить жизнь служению Богу. Он хорошо рисовал, но считал это лишь увлечением. Тем не менее Кенна не стал священником, а пошел по художественной линии — постепенно от живописи к фотографии. Он поступил в Лондонский колледж печатного дела, служил ассистентом рекламного фотографа, работал репортером. В 1976 году Кенна впервые попал в США, куда вскоре переехал. Подающего большие надежды фотографа заметила признанная королева фотопечати Рут Бернхард и пригласила в свою мастерскую. Рут посвятила Кенну в секреты проявки и печати фотографии, научила, тому, что негатив — это широкое поле для последующей творческой работы, «необработанная почва, требующая смелого плуга талантливого земледельца».
Кенна говорит со зрителем на своем, особом, языке. Художник как будто приглашает зрителя к интимному, личному разговору. Каждый снимок
Стиль, которому Кенна не изменял на протяжении многих лет (даже в рекламе), можно назвать философско-метафизической фотографией; время и память — основные его категории. Каспар Давид Фридрих от фотографии, Кенна говорит: «Память, время, как метафизическая субстанция, терпение, перемены — это ключевые темы моего фотоанализа длинною в жизнь». Когда видишь работы Кенны, становится очевидным то, что его служение миру явленное в лице фотографии, сродни служению Богу, которому Кенна хотел посвятить себя в юности.
Фотографии Кенны — это вся Планета, но планета без людей. Они там не нужны. Silentium!
