Danish Photographer Wins Ian Parry Scholarship

July 08, 2004
By Jay DeFoore

David Hogsholt of the Danish School of Journalism has won the prestigious 2004 Ian Parry Scholarship for "Mia: Living Life Trying," a black-and-white essay documenting the life of a young drug-addled prostitute in Copenhagen.

Past winner Marcus Bleasdale, one of the competition judges this year, says Hogsholt’s work emerged from a handful of finalists because of the photographer’s "extremely personal" connection to his subjects.

"It’s a subject we have seen many times--drugs and prostitution--but he managed a level of access that could only be applauded," Bleasdale says. "The relationship he managed to nurture with his subject sang from the images he submitted."

This year the contest received the largest number of entries in its 15-year history, with applicants coming from Estonia, Russia, Denmark, the United States, the United Kingdom and Iran.

The finalists were Alexander Gronsky of Estonia, Luca Ferrari and Leo Maguire of the University of Wales College, and Gordon Welters of Germany.

Bleasdale, who won the award in 2000, calls the scholarship "a fantastic opportunity for a young photographer to leapfrog into the professional world." Past winners include Zijah Gafic, Jonas Bendiksen, Harriet Logan and Leonie Purchas.

For winning, Hogsholt will receive a prize package totaling nearly $9,000, including donated equipment and project funding from Nikon, image.net and Metro Imaging of London.

In addition to the financial award, the winner of the Ian Parry Scholarship is automatically accepted as a finalist for the World Press Photo’s Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. The finalists’ work will be published in The Sunday Times Magazine and exhibited at the Tom Blau Gallery in London from August 18 to September 1. Work from the first 15 years of the award will also be the subject of Eyes Wide Open (Chris Boot), a photo book that will be launched at Visa pour l’Image photojournalism festival in September.
