The balcony from which the dictator Mussolini, the first fascist in modern world history, spoke. From here he proclaimed his imperialist ideas. Now the area under the balcony has become a traditional rendezvous. The movement known as Fascism was founded by Italian idealists in 1919, convinced of the justice and feasibility of its mission to bring Italy out of the chaos generated by the war, transforming it into a state in which justice and heroism would be most valued. This movement got its name from the bundle of rods—the fascine—which in ancient Rome was a distinctive sign of special power vested with authority to restore order. To achieve their goals, their socialist leader Benito Mussolini, after his campaign against Rome in 1922, between 1925 and 1943, created a one-party state dominated by corporate totalitarianism. Now the term fascism has a broader meaning. Thus the academician Pavlov called fascism the state system in which the ideas of socialism acquired the character of totalitarianism [Pavlov: Letter To Molotov, 1934].
